How we veneer and finish our birch plywood cabinets

A loudspeaker cabinet is part of the acoustic system, not simply a container for drivers and crossover components. Its panels must remain rigid and quiet while also presenting a finish that reflects the care invested in every internal detail. At Sunship Audio, the visual character of each enclosure begins with heavily braced birch plywood and develops through a deliberate sequence of preparation, veneering, sanding, and finishing.

Our custom horn-loaded loudspeakers are built around TAD-Pioneer compression drivers and woofers, with bi-radial wooden horns and time-aligned passive crossovers. The cabinet finish is therefore treated as the final expression of a structural and acoustic design process. It must look refined, feel substantial, and remain stable over years of listening.

Why birch plywood is our starting point

Birch plywood offers a useful combination of strength, dimensional stability, and clean machining. Its many thin layers create a robust panel with consistent density, making it well suited to heavily braced loudspeaker cabinets. Compared with softer sheet materials, it holds fasteners securely and produces crisp edges around horn openings, access panels, and cabinet joints.

The visible edges also have a distinctive layered appearance. Some clients prefer to celebrate that construction by leaving selected edges exposed, while others choose a continuous wood veneer for a quieter, more furniture-like surface. Both approaches begin with the same careful cabinet assembly and internal bracing.

Before any veneer is applied, the enclosure is inspected for flatness, joint quality, and the accuracy of every cutout. A beautifully finished cabinet cannot compensate for a panel that has not been properly prepared beneath the surface.

Preparing the cabinet surface

Surface preparation starts with removing machining marks and leveling transitions between adjoining panels. We work through progressively finer abrasives rather than relying on a single aggressive sanding pass. This prevents deep scratches from reappearing under oil, lacquer, or clear coat and keeps broad surfaces visually even.

The cabinet is then cleaned thoroughly. Dust is especially troublesome when working with open-grained woods because small particles can become trapped in adhesive or finish. Edges receive particular attention, since they absorb liquids more readily and can show uneven color if they are not sealed consistently.

Veneer selection follows preparation. Sheets are matched for tone, figure, and grain movement before they are cut. On wide cabinet sides, book-matched or carefully sequenced leaves create visual balance. The aim is not to make every cabinet look mechanically identical, but to ensure that the natural wood pattern feels intentional.

Applying and matching the veneer

We cut veneer slightly oversize, allowing a small margin for accurate trimming after bonding. The adhesive system is chosen for reliable coverage and a stable bond across the large, rigid plywood panels. Even pressure is essential: gaps, trapped air, or uneven clamping can become visible only after the final finish has been applied.

The order of application matters. Large side panels are generally completed before smaller areas, while corners and narrow returns are planned to keep grain direction coherent. We avoid treating veneer as a decorative sticker; it becomes part of the cabinet’s visual geometry, following the enclosure’s proportions and emphasizing the shape of the horns and baffles.

After bonding, the overhang is trimmed with care around openings and edges. Sharp tools and controlled passes help prevent chipping or lifting. Each trimmed boundary is then sanded by hand so that it meets the adjoining surface without a visible step.

Shaping edges and protecting the details

Edges influence both the appearance and the durability of a loudspeaker. A completely sharp corner can be vulnerable to knocks and may make a large cabinet appear visually severe. A small, consistent radius softens the silhouette while preserving the purposeful geometry of the enclosure.

Edge treatment is performed before the final finish, with the radius repeated by hand and checked under raking light. This type of lighting reveals sanding marks, uneven transitions, and slight variations that may not be visible under workshop illumination. The surface is corrected until it feels continuous when touched as well as when viewed.

Horn flares receive the same level of attention. Their curved surfaces are difficult to sand uniformly, so we work gradually around the profile and avoid flattening the transitions that define the horn. The result is a smooth wooden form that complements the precision of the compression driver mounted behind it.

Choosing oils, lacquers, and sheen

The finishing product depends on the veneer, the intended appearance, and the level of protection required. A hard-wearing clear coat can preserve a lighter natural color and provide strong resistance to handling. An oil-based finish can deepen the grain and create a warmer, more tactile appearance, provided the surface is prepared to an exact standard.

Sheen is selected with the room in mind. High gloss can emphasize reflections and highlight every small surface irregularity, while a satin or low-sheen finish tends to look calmer across a large cabinet. We generally favor finishes that allow the grain and craftsmanship to remain visible without making the enclosure visually dominant.

Several thin applications are preferable to one heavy coat. Between coats, the surface is lightly abraded and cleaned so that each layer bonds evenly. Drying time is respected rather than compressed, since rushing the process can lead to soft areas, uneven sheen, or a finish that changes appearance later.

Consistency from cabinet to complete system

Finishing does not happen in isolation from the rest of the loudspeaker. The location of the drivers, the proportions of the horn, the crossover access, and the cabinet’s relationship with the listening room all influence the final design. Before delivery, each surface is examined under different angles of light. Doors, terminals, removable panels, and mounting points are checked for clean operation without damaging the surrounding finish. The cabinet is also inspected for consistent color between left and right channels, especially where natural veneer varies across adjacent sheets.

For a custom-built loudspeaker, small variations are part of working with real wood. What matters is that those variations are selected, balanced, and finished with discipline. The final pair should feel unified while retaining the character of its material.

Care that preserves the finish

Owners can help maintain the cabinet with a few simple habits:
